By listening to students, schools can make informed decisions about the changes that will best support all learners. Just as important, when students are engaged authentically as leaders, problem-solvers, and decision-makers, these experiences give them an understanding and ownership of how SEL is implemented in their schools. This is a step toward ensuring that all students experience a sense of agency—the ability to make choices and take actions that impact one’s own trajectory and influence the wider world. When students have a sense of agency, they believe that their own active participation matters. Schools can foster a sense of identity, agency, community, and belonging by providing a variety of thoughtful opportunities for all students—not just those who regularly volunteer—to lead and contribute both in and outside of the classroom. This includes actively engaging students who don’t typically take on leadership roles by recognizing that the knowledge, life experience, and culture of all students’ are assets to the school community. School Look-fors: Student-led discussions that rely on communication skills and typify distributed power. It is important that school-community partnerships are carefully and strategically cultivated and align on a common language, strategies, and communication around SEL-related efforts and initiatives. Community organizations, in partnership with the principal and the SEL team, can foster this alignment for seamless student support. To ensure regular communication and collaboration, include community partners on the school’s SEL team. SEL team meetings can then be leveraged for schools and community partners to align their work to support SEL so their efforts are not fragmented or redundant. This can include aligning expectations, shared agreements, and language used for social and emotional learning, and sharing practices that contribute to a positive environment. School Look-fors: The school has developed strategic and aligned community partnerships to support schoolwide SEL. At the core of a supportive classroom is a caring, engaging teacher who establishes authentic trusting relationships with each student. High Yield Strategy 1 (Classroom): Community-Building: SEL teams can foster community-building in all classrooms by supporting teachers in developing and collaborating on consistent developmentally appropriate strategies. These may include learning about their students’ interests, lived experiences, and cultural backgrounds; providing opportunities for parents to engage in classrooms; developing structures for students to get to know each other; and listening to students’ feedback on classroom instruction or procedures (see this tool to guide staff chats with students to strengthen relationships and seek feedback). High Yield Strategy 2 (Classroom): Classroom Shared Agreements: Creating classroom-shared agreements is a powerful strategy for developing a sense of community. These agreements reflect students’ shared understanding of how they wish to be treated and will treat one another, and connect to the school’s vision and schoolwide norms. Prominently displayed in the classroom, they reinforce SEL and help create a shared sense of purpose and ideals. High Yield Strategy 3 (Classroom): Community Building Circles: Regular class meetings, often conducted while seated in a circle, can be used to build a sense of belonging and trusting relationships as well as a way to introduce academic content. In elementary classrooms this may be a daily or weekly practice. In middle and high school classrooms, consider facilitating circles at the beginning of a semester, after a break from school, to begin and end a unit, during advisory periods or extracurricular club meetings, or to process current events. Building circles into your schedule on a consistent basis will increase the effectiveness, by building on the relationships and skills that are developed each time students participate.
